Academician Phil S. Baran is a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University and a professor at Scripps Research Institute. He studied under Nobel laureate E. J. Academician Shen Yinchu is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a biochemistry expert, known as the "Father of Polyacrylamide" and the "Pioneer of China's Bio-Chemical Industry."
He created the industrial technology for acrylamide production using microbial catalysis and established China's first industrialized facility for producing bulk chemical raw materials through biotechnology. He pioneered the application of biocatalysis in the chemical industry. In 2021, the National Functional Polymer Industry Committee awarded Academician Shen the "Lifetime Contribution Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of the National Functional Polymer Industry" .
